MINE FLOODED.
PUNT TO BE SALVAGED.
DIRECTORS' DECISION. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. The director* of the Hikurangi Coal Company, Limited, decided yesterday to abandon indefinitely any further attempts at mining and to salvage whatever plant is available. This decision was arrived at after an inspection of the damage done to the new workings by the abnormal flooding of a few days go. Mr. Stevens said that a comprehensive investigation showed that the flooding of the mine was caused by the bursting of a dam outside the control of the company, and the water thus released caused the normal drainage in the area to become blocked, backing up the water toward the Waro station. Included in the damage to the mine was the loss of eight pumps and 12 motors. Numerous rails were torn up, and the cost of repairs, including the unwatering of the drives and other expenses, was estimated at £7000.
