GOLD COINAGE.
SOUTH AFRICAN VIEW. Limitation of Metal Plan Criticised. NOT ALTER WORLD POSITION. United Press Association. —Copyright. (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 2. A reply by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir John Simon, to a question asked in the House of Commons, promising to inquire if South Africa had made a proposal to sterilise a quantity of gold; had created a new gold scare, states the Johannesburg correspondent of the "Morning Post." This scare, however, had later abated upon a statement by the Minister of the Interior, Mr. J. H. Hofmeyr, to the effect that his Government considered limitation of gold output would be preposterous because it rot alter the world position, in which hoarding was the greatest trouble. A number of experts are urging a return to gold coinage as a way out of the impasse.
