TWO WINDJAMMERS.
DUE HERE AT CHRISTMAS.
BARQIKS WITH GUANO.
Rare enough in any waters these days, two vessels of the small windjammer fleet, the barque Penang and the fourmast barque Pamir, are scheduled to visit Auckland this summer with Seychelles guano for discharge. They are part of the largest fleet of sailing vessels in existence owned by Gustaf Erikson, of Mariehamm, in the Aland Islands, which includes the barque Winterhude. Both the Penang and the Pamir were formerly German craft. The Penang was the Albert Rickmers and was built for that once famous line in Bremerhaven in 1005. The Pamir, one of the most striking vessels afloat, was constructed on the stocks of Blohm and Voss, Ham- I
burg, for the Laeisz "Flying P."' line. She is of the same age as the Penang hut her tonnage is :j<l"2o tons as compared with 2(>1!) tons of the former. The actual date of arrival of the barques is uncertain, and even the loading is governed by the weather, as the guano is shipped from the islands by lighters. Given reasonable conditions, however, they should be in Auckland around Christmas. They will discharge to the agency of Messrs. A. S. Paterson and Company, LtdThe Penang and the Pamir have taken part in the grain 'race'' from Australian ports to Europe for some years, the Pamir arriving at Falmouth from Port Lincoln on May 2S. this year the voyage occupying 99 days—a very fair passage. The Penang has not yet reported.
