THE WEEK'S WORK.

THE FLOWER GARDEN. Fork between bulbs that are showing through the soil. Hand weed and stir the soil between Anemones, Ranunculi, etc. Prepare ground for the planting of early flowering annuals. While weather is preventing outdoor work, prepare labels and repair seed boxes. Do not overlook giving the tools a good cleaning; oil all the handles and put them in shape for the spring work. Plant Roses and ornamental trees and shrubs. Any transplanting of large shrubs should be done. Now is the time to put in hand any alterations or renovations. Clean beneath shrubs, fork over the surface and do any pruning required. THE GREENHOUSE. Sow some of the early annuals. Cuttings or divisions of Lobelia can be taken. Seedlings must be handled as soon as large enough. Wash the outsides of the pots to prevent the growth of moss and lichen. Stir the soil between seedlings to prevent moss forming. Keep the house as dry as possible and avoid too much watering. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. Trench the ground ready for the coming season's root crops. Prepare ground for planting Onions; this can be commenced at once. Fork or spade over weedy ground and bury any yellow leaves of Cabbage, etc. Prepare ground for planting Potatoes; a warm, sheltered position is required. When soil is dry enough, a few rows of Peas can be sown. Plant Shallots and Potato Onions. These need similar treatment to ordinary Onions. Go over any roots in store and pick out any showing signs of decay. Seed Potatoes should be stood in boxes for sprouting. Avoid any planting or sowing when soil is saturated. A little seed of Cabbage, Cauliflower can be sown in a box for early planting. THE FRUIT GARDEN. Pruning and spraying are the chief work just now. While other work is held up by wet weather, it is a good opportunity to clean up the orchard.' Fruit tree planting can be done. Cat oat old useless trees; they are breeding places for disease. Choose varieties when planting that will suit requirements.
