COUNTY LEAD AGAINST NZ. XI.

LANCASHIRE MATCH.

Express Bowler Makes Top Score and Is Unbeaten.

COWIE BEST TRUNDLER. United Pres3 Association.—.Copyright. (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, May .'SI. At the end of the second day's play at Old Trafford, Lancashire had a. first innings' lead of o2 runs over New Zealand, which had one wicket down for 18 runs in the second innings. The Dominion batted throughout Saturday, iu scoring 272 for nine wickets, the not out men being Tindill (38) and Cowie (.'J). The innings closed this morning for 282, end in reply Lancashire made 314. Before stumps were pulled for the day, the New Zealand captain was caught behind the wicket without scoring.

The New Zealanders bowled pertinaciously, on a wicket as hard as a concrete road, but success depended too much on Cowie and Roberts, The former had another good day, never being mastered. He opened with nine overs, throe maidens, 10 runs, and two wickets —one caught at square-leg and the other bowled next ball. Besides he had a catch dropped in the slips.

Lancashire topped the century for the loss of two wickets, but after lunch Tindill smartly stumped Pavnter, and Wallace brilliantly ran out Oldfield.

New Zealand gained a grip on the same, five wickets falling in two hours for 109 runs. Roberts had his reward, after strenuous striving, by securing two wickets, and another chance was missed in the slips off him. Weir proved an effective change.

However, Phillipson, who played really well, Duckworth, Pollard and Wilkinson saved the county by determined batting. Forty-four runs were added for the last wicket stand, and it was broken only by a fine catch of his own bowling by Moloney. Except for two dropped catches the fielding generally was clean, sometimes brilliant. The slow bowling did not disturb the batsmen, the wickets being taken almost wholly by the faster men. New Zealand again was unable to get a good start, Page falling in the first over, when he snicked a bumper which ho tried to hook. Hadlee and Moloney carefully played out time. The attendance was 3000. Scores:— NEW ZEALAND.—First Innings. Page, b Wilkinson 13 Hadlee, c Wilkinson, b Watson 24 Moloney, c and b Pollard 77 Vivian, c Duckworth,b .
