ON A PAR WITH DANISH.
I — j Strong criticism was expressed in some
| producing' Circles in February at the butter J marketing methods adopted by New Zealand, because of the wide disparity in price between .butter from the Dominion and from Denmark, ! the contention being: that this was due to the jhostility of English buyers to the control system. The margin, however, has been 'steadily reduced until now it has almost j reached vanishing point, and the acting- ! Director of Marketing is justified in his statement that there cannot be much wrong with the marketing policy. Before control was adopted the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, was assured of the co-operation of distributional interests in England. When i 11lie price dropped to a much lower rate l j relatively than the Danish, it was suggested i that he had not attained lhat object, that the 'Board had antagonised the trade, and hud [thus unfavourably affected the market. It is | (clear now, however, that there is no hostility : » to our butter on the English market, and that [ the system now in of spreading ; 5 deliveries to meet consumption has satisfied at least a 1 arge proportion of English , operators. They know now that regular > supplies can be obtained, that there w.i. no heavy unloading at inopportune moment-, and that the quality can be relied upon. There mav, and probably will be, wider margins in the future than at present exist, but the Marketing Board has proved th<> strength of its position, and by reaching a parity with the Danish producer has demonstrated that its . methods are acceptable to the larger deal- is , ,in England. 1
