272 FOR NINE.

MOLONEY TOP SCORE.

WALLACE BRILLIANT.

VIVIAN-WEIR FAIL AGAIN.

LONDON, May 30. Facing the stiffest trial of the tour so far on a ground on which it will play England in the second Tent match, the New Zealand cricket team opened inauepiciously on a perfect wicket in the game against' Lancashire on Saturday. The weather w;in delightful. At stumps New Zealand had scored 272 for nine wickets. New Zealand thus finished the day with the highest total of the tour, this performance seeming improbable at the luncheon adjournment. The Lancashire team wae: Lister, I'aynter, Hopwood, Iddon, Oldfield, Wataon, Place, Philiipson, Pollard, Duckworth, Wilkiueon. One of the features of the day was the success of the new slow bowler, Wilkinson. The attendance wae over 6000. The first three wickets fell in. an hour, and a half for 56. Wallace and Moloney then retrieved the position considerably, largely through another aggressive, and brilliant innings by Wallace, who hit six fours, three threes and only five singles in an hour of attractive driving, hooking and cutting. Sixtyeight runs were added for the fourth wicket. Weir stayed in long enough to help Moloney in a partnership for 54. The latter took over two hours to reach his half-century, but held the innings together, being undisturbed by any of the bowlers. Donnelly assisted in a stand for 29 runs before falling to the new ball. Moloney, after 220 minutes' patient batting, with only three boundary strokes, was similarly dismissed. Lamason and Tindill were just (settling down when a thunderstorm interrupted play for nearly half an hour. Tho pair then steadily compiled- an invaluable 57 runs in a timely partnership, neither appearing greatly troubled by the attack, although the scoring rate was slow. Tindill was unbeaten for 38 after batting for an hour and a quarter. Scores:— NEW" ZEALAND—First Innings. Page', $>;,Wilkinson 13 Had lee, c Wilkinson, b Watson .. :. 24 Moloney, c and b.
