OPERATIONS BEGIN.
COOK STRAIT CABLE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELUNGTON, Saturday. | Lyall Bay to-day was the scene of j cable-laying operations, when the Wei- J lington end of the new cable across' Cook Strait was laid by the motor ship ; Hokitika. The Hokitika is laying about! tw.p miles and a half of cable from Lyall Bay, and the other end is to be attached to a buoy. This will be picked up by the; cable ship Recorder, which will lay the remaining sections across the etrait. j
