FREIGHTER CRIPPLED.
STRUCK BY LIGHTNING. MELBOURNE, May 28. Struck by lightning in a fierce storm off the coast, the British tramp steamer Appledore put into Portland, a Victorian outport, to-day for repairs. The Appledore was en route to England in ballast from Sydney. The sliip r s compasses were rendered useless and an export compass adjuster has been sent from Melbourne to Port-, land.
