HOCKEY TOURNEY.

INTER-'VARSITY GAMES.

AUCKLAND STUDENTS BEST. Both the Seddon Stick and the wooden spoon came to Auckland at the end of the inter'-varsity hockey tourney yesterday at Remuera. Auckland A by decisively beating Otago, by six goals to nil, took the varsity championship and the B team had the doubtful honour of being the lowest on the list, winning the wooden spoon. Hard and fast hockey characterised the final between Auckland and Otago, with the northerners always in a winning vein from the first bully-off. Watson opened the account with a hard-driven ball off a penalty corner, which Hogben had stopped. Then followed fast exchanges in midfield. Twenty minutes after the 6tart Otago put in their first real iiac;h, Warren, Walter and Aldred combining in a short passing movement, but the shot went astray across the mouth of the goal. From the resulting bully, the Auckland forwards got going and Braithwaite with a good swinging shot netted the second goal. Just before half-time Yule and Cooper carried the ball downfield, the latter centring to Braithwaite. who made no mistake for his second goal and Auckland's third. Early in the second half Greenbank, the Auckland left winger, added another score with a pretty flick shot —learnt from the Indians. Greenbank seems to specialise in this style of play. Otago then for a time woke up and temporarily raised the hopes of their friends, also giving the Auckland custodian some work to do, and this he did well. Watson got another goal for Auckland from a melee in the circle. The final score came from a combined movement, with Yule drawing the defending goalie out from the goalmouth. leaving it open for A. Broun to net with a straight sliot. Messrs. H. Watts and G. Wells were the umpires.

The Wooden Spoon. Massey College showed themselves a vastly improved team when they lleat Auckland B, s—l, in the side competition for the wooden spoon. The scores were a succession of successful shots by Petch, who netted all the five goals, Hanson getting the Auckland single. Ladies' Tourney. Otago 'Varsity girls must consider themselves lucky to be able to take home the Reeves Stick. Auckland in the final with Otago played wonderful hockey and deserved a win instead of a two-point draw. 'Hie Otago forwards held on long enough in the second half to smother the brilliant local back division. Auckland goals were scored by E. King Mason and M. Barr, while J. Hamer netted the two for Otago. Messrs. H. E. Watts and G. Gutry were the umpires. Won Their Blues. Mr. E. Watts chose the following players from the competing colleges to represent the New Zealand University in a match against Auckland this morning:— Goal, D. M. Hall (Canterbury); fullbacks, G. L. Hogben, captain (Auckland), W. I. Cawkwell (Auckland); halves, R. Hurst (Canterbury), C. Walters (Canterbury), W. F. Johnston (Victoria); forwards, G. N. Yule (Auckland), A. Cole (Victoria), A.
