FAVOURITES FAIL.

WAIKATO CLUB. ■ i THE CONCLUDING DAY. c FOUR GISBORNE SUCCESSES. Not one favourite was successful on the second day of the Waikato Racing Club's Coronation meeting, which coneluded at Te Rapa yeeterday, and several surprises were registered. Gay Roee ran up to her first day'e form to again annex the chief flat race, while Colheion stayed on splendidly to ecore in the Coronation Hurdles. The Waikato Steeplechase was won by the fourth fancy, Allegretto, and Dβ Friend wae successful in the open ' sprint. Gisborne horeee accounted for four ' events. I The inquiry into the falling of Tudor ' on the tirst day, when C. McGovern coin- ' plained of being interfered with by Don was conducted, the judicial commit- : tee taking no action. B. Kowhai, the rider | ' ot Collision in the Coronation Hurdles, was suspended for a month for careless riding. During the day the totalieator handled the sum of £29,429, compared with £19,91810/ last year, an increase of £9510 10/. Ihie made a total of £05,702 for the ' meeting, against £46,328 10/, an increase of £19,373 10/. A long way back in the early stages. Gay Rose won the Te Rapa Handicap in a similar style to the manner in which she scored in the President's Handicap on the first day. Not sighted in the first few furlongs, she came with a great rattle on the outside in the straight, and just got up to overhaul Te Hai on the poet.. Gay Rose w in splendid form at present, and as she is partial to winter conditions I ehe will have to be considered at Ellerslie. Te Hai appreciated the shorter distance to the first day, and ran an excellent race. Tradesman was handy throughout. When the favourite, Windeor Lad, wae bowling along well within himself about! five furlongs from home, he looked as if he would gain an easy victory in the Waikato Steeples, but at the fence by the half-mile he came down. Allegretto registered a sound effort, ae it wae his first race for nearly twelve months. He jumped splendidly throughout, and although a trifle big in condition the outing in sure to do him a lot of good. Yalpeen went hie beet race for some time, while Monastic wae hanging on in third place. The contest was robbed of a lot of interest through the falling of Windeor Lad, Sky Pilot and Forest Glow. De Friend wae a long way back over the first part of the Maeroa Handicap, and he had to stage a brilliant run over the last bit to beat Johnny Walls by a narrow margin. Johnny Walls and Whirling set a very fast pace out in front, and at one stage were about six lengths in front, and this did not assist them over the last furlongv Johnny Walls battled on really well, and he may have won if he had been a little more quietly ridden. Atfalene and Greek Gold went lair races. Hunting Star quickly jumped to the front of the Farewell Handicap, and he. looked ae if he would score comfortably, but had to be ridden right out to beat Sunny Downs, who finished well. Hunting Star is partial to soft going, but pulled up i lame. Sunny Downe and Gay Streak ran solid races, but Jan Ridd tired quickly near the end. Later reeulte were:— TE RAPA HANDICAP of £350.
