BUSES SHOW LOSS.
TRAMS PROFITABLE.
WELLINGTON POSITION.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this dav
A debit balance of £1502, compared with a credit of £792 for the previous year, is revealed in the Wellington tramway and bus accounts for the year ended March 31, 1937. The net effect is that the service went back by £2354 during the year.
The trams showed a profit of £3505, and the buses a loss of £5007. The electricity department showed a credit of £8987, compared with £43.343 at March 31, 193<i.
The .Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, commenting on the position, said the tramways would have to be watched with the greatest care, and expenditure would have to be controlled very carefully, if an increase in the fare.s was to be avoided.
Keferring to the electricity department, Mr. Hislop said the City Council had reduced its charges to the lowest rate ill the southern hemisphere, and if it could keep on the right side it could have no cause for complaint. It should be recognised, however, that the council could not now draw on the electricity account to assist its general funds.
