SHIP DESERTERS.
TWO SEAMEN IMPRISONED.
Two more seamen arrested on a charge of deserting the steamer Sydney Star at Lyttelton on April 1 appeared in the Police Court to-day. Qne was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment by Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, 5.M.,. in the Police. Court yesterday. ' • The accused to-day were George Richard Johnson (20) and James Edward Dohcrty (32). Both pleaded guilty. Senior Sergeant Flanagan said both men left their ships when she was at Auckland, although the warrants for their arrest were not issued until the vessel reached Lyttelton. They had signed on for the round trip in England. Neither was wanted back by the shipping company. The ship had since arrived at London. "Much trouble and expense is caused the shipping company when these seamen desert," said Mr. Flanagan. "They had to be replaced by other men at New Zealand rates ; qf pay.'f. Johnson; told, .ifne presiding justices,Messrs. J. j*.-Patersdh and J. Hislop, that he had been working* in Auckland since he .left his ,ship, and'that he, wanted to remain in New Zealand. ... , ( Sentence;of seven days': imprisonment was imposed, in ejach case.
