PONSONBY COMBINE.

Ability to combine in attack and interplay of a kind that was of a high order, enabled Ponsonby to have the best of the play against City, and win by a comfortable margin. With the forward play even, the issue lay with the backs, and it was there that Ponsonby demonstrated their superiority. The work of the City inside | backs carried no thrust or penetration, and the only chances that the City threequarters had were those that they made for themselves. Ri-ta was playing well up to the stage I that he had to retire, and his absence made a lot of difference to his side. Two of the City backs who came through the day with credit ware VViberg, whose accurate placekicking was responsible for three goals, and Hapi, a strong-running and dashing wing. Moody. Raymond and Johnson stood out in the forwards, the latter raking with skill all the clay. Morgan and Keene were prominent in the Ponsonby forwards. Stockley played well in the inte-rinediate line, while Kay in the centre was brilliant, and his speedy pivotal play was the biggest faction in the gathering of the Ponsonby points. A CLEAR-CUT WIN. After a fairly even first half in which neither side provided any thrills, although thpy had an advantage in points, Marist Brothers completely dominated the second spell to eventually run out a comfortable winner by 27 points to 10. While the football shown by both Marists, and the defeated team, Newton Rangers, was a distinct improvement on the form shown in the preliminary games a week previously, I it was solid playing without being highclass. A fine try was recorded by Midgeley early in the second spell when he got the ball near the half-way peg and streaked down the side line to beat four of the Xewton men. It was a great solo run. Another good try was when Anderson went over, but the hard work had been accomplished by Donovan who had gone through the centre of the field before sending the pass to Anderson. Newton's best score resulted from smart passing between Si>sous, Dempsey and Simpson, the movement being started and finished off by Sissoas. a here were really no outstanding players on *.tber side, but all were triers and as the season proceeds no doubt some of them will be very much in the spotlight The game was played in the best spirit and there was a minimum of whistle.
