"SAVE THE MOTHERS" CAMPAIGN TO OPEN.
HEW BRITISH MOVE.
Concern at Rising Deaths
From Abortion.
EXPERTS TO INVESTIGATE,
United Press Association.—Copyright.
(Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, April 28. An important new "Save the Mothers" campaign is announced by the Minister of Health, Sir Kingsley Wood, following publication of a White Paper embodying a report of the committee of investigation into maternal mortality.
The report states that attempted abortions are apparently frequent and increasing, and responsible for a number of deaths.
The Minister, therefore, has decided on the immediate appointment of a committee of medical and legal experts with Mr. Norman Birkett, K.C., as chairman. The committee will consider steps to reduce mortality from this cause.
Another measure will make provision for "flying squads" of skilled hospital workers to attend to women who are too ill to be moved from their homes.
The report also urges further research into the possible influence of diet on child-bearing.
