AUDITOR-GENERAL.
MR. FOWLER APPOINTED. OVER FORTY YEARS' SERVICE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The appointment of Mr. Jnmcs Henry Fowler as Controller and AuditorGeneral was announced by the actingPrime Minister, the Hon. P. Eraser, at the conclusion of a Cabinet meeting to-niglit, Mr. Fowler, who, lias been deputy-Controller and Auditor- General for the past 15 years, succeeds the late Mr. G. F. C. Campbell. All Mr, Fowler's Government scrviiv has been in the Audit Department, lie is the liftli occupant of the office to which lie lias now been appointed "and possesses the remarkable record of having served under his four predecessors. Born at Blenheim in 187S, Mr. Fowler 1 was educated at Blenheim School, where ■ he won a Marlborough. Scholarship. This I entitled him to two years' tuition at ' Nelson College, and while there he won ' another scholarship which entitled him 1 to remain at the college for a third ■ year. After passing the junior and senior , Civil Service, examinations he was j appointed a cadet in the Audit Office in- , 1895. He remained at the head odice ( for seven years and in 1002 went to , Auckland as- audit inspector. He was i engaged in inspectorial work for about 20 years, serving in almost nil'"parts of New Zealand. In 1022 he was appointed chief clerk", chief audit inspector and, deputy-Controller and Auditor-General. Mr. Fowler-liast becn a member of the Now Zealand Society of Accountants since its formation.
