CHURCHES WARNED.
SUPPORT OF LABOUR
DOMINION TENDENCIES. THE TOTALITARIAN STATE. Regret that at the last election there had "been a tendency for some of the churches to become associated with the Labour party was expressed by the leader of the National party, the Hon. A. Hamilton, in an - address in Christchurch. . Mr. Hamilton snid he was a member of a church, and he knew that many church people thought'that the last-Gov-erment . had been too hard. They believed in social service, and thought that more could be done if the Labour party were returned.
There was a tendency among Labour supporters to connect up socialism and social service, but the two did not go ■together. He thought the Church people should watch where they were going,'as there was a tendency for the churches to become too closely associated with organised and official Labour.
"Mr. Hamilton quoted an eminent <nuthorityas saying that the Church had three main enemies. The first was the indifference of its own people, the second was people of the atheist type, and the third was the totalitarian State.
: "We are heading fast towards the totalitarian State," he added. "That means when the State takes charge of everything, and the first clash that usually comes is between the State and the Church. Some ' people, are very anxious about it, and if we have an overthrow from our .present system it will be of the Communist type. Tlwt is not so far away."
