Sullivan, , to-day. "The increase has been made at . the request of wholesalers, and will apply i to North Canterbury, Wellington and i Mauawatu, the new price bringing these -'areas into line with those where there > is no fixation," he said. A "Zazette" notice announcing the new . A "Gazette' , notice announcing the new j prices will become operative from the , date of issue, according to advice from an official of the Industries and ComI nierce Department received this evening ; from Wellington. ,! In the North Canterbury area the J increased prices will be: For euper grade, 2/ a gallon; for ordinary standard, 1/11, with commensurate differences in certain districts as laid down by the previous fixation regulations. Commenting on the new prices, Mr. |V. H. Smith, general manager of the Shell Company of New Zealand, Ltd., and Mr. J. H. Lindon, general manager of the Vacuum Oil Company, as representatives of the oil companies, said: "On December 12, 1936, prices of motor spirit were increased one penny a gallon in those parts of New Zealand not eubjeet to price control. At the same time application was made to the Minister of Industries and Commerce for an increase of one penny a gallon in the controlled areas. The December increase was dictated by increases in the price of motor spirit at the source and in the cost of ocean freights. The Department of Industries and Commerce undertook a careful investigation into all these factors in price, and has now agreed that prices may be increased in the controlled areas to bring them into line with prices already established elsewhere since December 12. Similar increases in the price of motor spirit have taken place in England and Australia, and in fact throughout the world." ' '
