AUCKLAND CLUB.

THE SECOND DAY. GAY TALKIE'S NOLAN. ST. IEGEB TO CERHE ABBAS. Backer* had a good day at EHerslie \ csterday, when the final day of the Auckland Racing Club'e autumn meeting wae held. No lose than five firet fancies were successful, while two third favourites collected first money. The day was marked by some eplendid finishes, and the 1 acing was full of incident from the outeet I he chief handicap event, the H. O. Noipn Handicap, wae annexed by the Takanini \wh year 'S! d x Gay Talkic ' while th * G«at -Northern St. Leger eaw Cerne Abbae win the classic after a great tussle with Man" damue and Rulette. L. Clifford was fined . . T-[ all,n -7 t( ? fulfil his engagements to ride lhangilamba and Saecone. During "? e J* aj L. the totalieator handled the sum ot £30,779, compared with £53,832 on the *fcomi day last year, a decrease of £23 053 I his made a total for the meeting of •t&>,/66\ against £102,291, a decrease for the fixture of £16,525. Gay Talkie wae responsible for a very smooth performance in winning the H O Nolan Handicap, a feature of hie effort being the pleasing way in which he -an out the mile and a half. He is only a I liree-year-old, but promisee to turn out n first-class stayer. He wae alwaye handy in the running, and when he wae asked for an extra effort in the straight finished impressively. Day Wind went a sound race, while Kelly had every chance, onlv to weaken in the last half-furlong. Flood '1 itle ran an excellent race under his big weight, and was closer at the end thai at any other stage. The second favourite, Scotland, was well up in the middle stages. but dropped back over the deciding stages. Backed with confidence, Tudor never looked in danger of defeat in the Autumn Steeplechase. He went to the front from the etart, and jumping faultlessly wan always clear of the field. Forest Glow trailed him throughout, and was handy enough at the home turn, but had no chance with the winner. Irish Comet hit a couple of fences hard, but never looked like troubling the front pair. Billy Boy and Valpeen jumped well. Although there were only four etartere in the Great Northern St. Leger Stakes, the event wae productive of a fine finish. Rulette was the leader until the distance, when Cerne Abbas and Mandamus both put in their claim, and in a rare tussle (erne Abbas got there by half a head from Mandamus, with Rulette only a Tipck away. Cerne Abbas annexed the (ireat Xorthern Oake on the first day. and she was undoubtedly the best stayer of the three-year-olds competing in the classics. Whirling confirmed hie good form in the Kaster Handicap by an attractive win in the Huia Handicap. He was just in behind the leaders until well into the straight, where he finished with a rattle, and held off tlie faot-finishing Prince Acre* by a neck. The latter may have just got there if h« had got a run a shade earlier. His turn is not far off. Royal Dance ran a solid race, while Johnnv Walk wae staying on. Tray Bit and Galilee set a solid mee in front, but weakened over the last bit. . . Quietly ridden in behind. Gay Rose finished splendidly to win/ : the Islington Handicap, and she did not look in danger of defeat once she put in her claim. It was her firet win for some time, although «lie had shown e'ene of returnirf? to nor Viest recently. Respectful went a sblH 'Tee, and may win a rnce shortly. Tc TTri onlv wenkened in the laet half-fnrlonjr. while King Neptune j>Vjo failed to finishes well a« expected. Lagoon was coming hr-me well in fifth place.
