RACING AT ELLERSLIE.

A BIG HELD.

PRESIDENTS HANDICAP

SEVERAL DUALLY ENGAGED.

A GLANCE AT THIS FORM.

The President's Handicap, with which the autumn meeting of the Auckland Racing Club will be inaugurated on Saturday, has attracted a splendid field both in point of quality and number, and an excellent race should be provided. Flood Tide (0.4) won the A.R.C. Handicap, one mile and a half, at Ellerslie on >iew Years Day with 9.1, but with 9-5 he tailed to get into the money in the Herries Memorial Cup, one mile and three furlongs at Te Aroha, and with lib less was unplaced in the President's Handicap one mile and a quarter, on the second day. In the Cup he gave Master Brierly the pinner, 161b, and Lagoon, who was third, -{lib. .Now he concedes Master Brierly 91b and -Lagoon 161b.. On the second day, in the President s Handicap, one mile and a quarter, he had 9.4, and gave Mazir, the winner, 161b, King Rey, who was third, Jib, and Scotland, the fourth horse, 101b Now he has to give King Rey lib, Master Brierly, Mazir and Scotland 91b, and Lagoon 161b, bo that he is meeting these horses on much better terms. Flood Tide S on event last y ear with 7.6. King «ey (».J) won two mile and a quarter events at the last Auckland meeting with 8.8% and 9.0 respectively, and since then he tailed to get into the money in the Herries Memorial, but with 8.13 on the second day was right up third in the President s Handicap He had 51b from Flood 1 ide and gave Master Brierly lib, Scotland ~.i La x ? oon , 101b and Mazir (the winner) 111b. Now he k within lib of Flood Tide and has to give Master Brierly, Mazir and Scotland 81b, while Lagoon is in receipt of lolb. .King Key is by no means, out of it. Martara (8.10) has been a great performer this season, winning four events out of his last five starts, the last being the Autumn Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, at Trentham this month, in which he carried 8.10. He is engaged in the Easter Handicap as well aa this event, and if started will have to be considered, but he has been sold and it is not .known whether he will start. Master Brierly (8.9), «i?°l fa , ain f „?** $& «econd t day: at (8.9), besides lading on the second day at Te Aroha, was also unplaced in the Ohinemuri Cup with 93: He, was givinefGay Talkie (the winner) 241b, and now thWis only 101b between them. Master Brierly does not appeal. Mazir and Scotland are on the same mark. The former, after winning on the second day of the Te Aroha meeting with 8.2, was out of the money in the Ohinemuri Cup, Gay Talkie, who was receiving 211b from him, winning. Now Mazir has to give him only 101b. Scotland was successful over a mile and a quarter at Te Rapa recently and was fourth in the President's Handicap, one mile and a quarter, with 8.8, which was his last start. Scotland is not without prospects. Lagoon (8.2) was third in the Gup at Te Aroha with 7.12, but has since been unplaced in the President's Handicap at the same meeting and also the Ohinemuri Cup. Sinking Fund (8.0) was out of the money in the latter event,, but previous to that had only been very; narrowly beaten in the Cup at Te Aroha and the Franklin Cup with 7.7 and 8-4 respectively. He is nicely placed at Ellerslie. Gay Talkie (7.13) had the minimum when he ran third in the Franklin Cup, and a similar impost when he scored in the Ohinemuri Cup.; On Saturday be was, unplaced in the Taujranga Cup with 8.8, but he may do better in this event. Knight of Australia (7.12) won the Takapuna Cup and the Franklin Cup, carrying 7.12 on the latter occasion. With 8.3 he ran a fair race in the Ohine-. muri Cup, only fading over the latter bif. He comes in on better terms now. • Kelly (7.8) was fourth in the Franklin Cup with 7.13, and is a possibility. Of those on the minimum, Armacourt, Valrent (who was frd in the Ohinemuri Cup), Round Up ho won over a mile aha 1W yards'lit eroa), and Loombination seem the bewt. Krag.Rey, Martara, Scotland, Sinking Fund slid Round Up are engaged in the Easter Sfndicap as well :as Ahis event, and the four firstnamed (if started in the President's Handicap) will have support. Of the others, Mazir, Armacourt, Knight of Australia, Gay Tajkie and Kelly also have good prospects, lint a better idea will be obtained a little later in the week, when, it is known what those with dual engagements are likely to contest.
