CAUSE FOR PRIDE.

MODERN HOSPITAL.

OPENED AT INVERCARGILL

IDEAL REAUSE3V

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

INVERCARGILL, this day.

Southland's new public hospital at Kew was formally opened on Saturday afternoon by the Minister of Health, the Hon. P. Fraeer, and was later inspected by a big crowd.

In addition to Mr. Fraser, there wae a number of other speakers, including some from other centres, all of whom praised the Southland Hospital Board for the realisation of an ideal after a wait of 20 years. High praise for the method of financing the new building was also given by Mr. Fraser, who said that it seemed the "nearest approach to coetlese credit" and was a reflection of the thrift and foresight of the people of the province.

Built at a cost of £150,000, situated in an ideal -spot well away from the noise and bustle of the city, and bounded on one β-ide by the Estuary, the new hospital at Kew is an acquisition of which Southland may well be proud. The suggestion that e new building should be erected was first made on November 8, 1917, and it wae a long time before suggestions became concrete and gave way to action, but when work began in October, 1933, there was no delay apart from that inseparable from such a big undertaking.

The progress .of the building has been watched with interest by the • public during the past four years, and there is now unqualified satisfaction with the building which has 5 ' at last emerged. The symmetry of design, the wealth of sun which the buildings will receive and the ease with which communication can be made with one block and another, are strikingly apparent. . ,

The building is/regarded ae one of the finest hospital blocks in the Dominion. It consists of four blocks, all of which, although separate entities, are connected by wide corridors, and each separate department gives proof of the extent to which the advantages of modern scientific planning have been applied. The building is a complete contrast in every way to its predecessor in the city.
