LOCAL BODIES.

NEW LYNN BOROUGH. A meeting of the New Lynn Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. George Lawson, preeidad, other members present being Messrs. A. Jeffrey, George Severne, A. Woolley, S. Hards and F. Carter. Spanish Medical Aid.—-Permission was given to the Spanish Medical Aid Committee to exhibit motion pictures on Sunday. March 21. Plunket Society .—The council donated two guineas to the above societj- and gave permission to the local branch to take up a street collection. Gardner Street.—A petition was received from residents relative to the condition of Gardner Street between Titirangi Road and Sea brook Avenue. The petition was supported by the Ratepayers' Association. It was pointed out that the road was under reconstruction, being part of this year's programme. It might be advisable to close the road under these conditions. Pedestrian facilities would be much improved before the end of the month.

Parker Avenue.—A further petition was received regarding Parker Avenue. The council anticipates reconstruction work on this road next year. The road represents one ot the Hetana Hamlet roads not properly tormed. Efforts to obtain money from the Government for this and other roads in a similar condition have failed.

PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD.

_ Thefortnightly meeting of the Papakura Town" Board was held last evening, the chairman, Mr.- H. E. McEntee, presiding. Pauper Burials.—A further letter was received irom the Auckland Funeral Directors' Association, regarding the burial of paupers and those mentally affected, quoting the Cemeteries Act, 1882 and 1908. to the effect that a section of the cemetery could be set aside as a pauper section, llie l own Board decided not to set any portion aside, but to carry out 'the law in cases where a justice of the peace certified that a pauper burial was required.

Mortgage Rehabilitation Appeal.—The first notice under the Mortgage Rehabilitation Act wa« received from the commission, for creditors to furnish their accounts. The town clerk was authorised to attend the commission.

Tar-sealing Tenders.—The Main highways Board wrote informing the board that the specifications for the Papakura- (. levedon and I'apakura-Titi highways had been approved. Later in the evening tenders tor the works were opened, all being oyer £.'}ooo. They were referred to the Main Highways Board for consideration.

Sports Permit.— The Papakura Amateur Athletic Club wan granted permission to make a charge for admission to a picnic at Edward I'aik on March 20.

Miscellaneous.—Accounts for £334 9 9 were passed for payment. Two tenders were received tor the new gaw chlorination plant for the water supply. After considerable discussion the tenders were referred to a committee to report back to the next board meeting. One tender was from Auckland and the other from Wellington.

Building Permit Sought.—A permit was refused to the Methodist Trust, which sought authority to build an iron shed behind the Premier Buildings, on the Great South Road, in the brick area. It was considered that a building erected with bricks on ,edge should meet the tnjc>t !»' need*.

OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Ine utanunu Borough Council met last evening, the deputy-Mayor, Mr. 4 J Orahani, presiding in the absence of the Mayor, Mr. (J. R. Petrie, M P. Use of Sturges Park.—A letter was received from the Auckland Rugby League asking that all football codes be considered in the allocation of Sturges Park for this season It was suggested by the League authorities that the opportunity be given to all codes to tender for the ground for the whole season or that the Otahuhu Council should follow the lead of other local bodies and make a flat charge for the ground and allot it on a pro rata basit. On the motion of the deputy-Mayor, seconded by Mr. F. W. Grey, it was decided to hold a special meeting of the council at 7 p m. on Wednesday evening, March W, and to invite representatives of the Kugby League to attend and state their proposals.

Park Improvements. — The engineer reported that work was now being carried out turfing a section of the extended playing area, and when this has been completed the old cricket pitch will be cut and returfed in readiness for the coming footbail season. IXte native tree reserve has been cleaned 'up and all the trees have been dug around, and it is hopd to have this section of the park ready for the mowing machine, making it much easier to keep in check.

Seaside Park.—The engineer reported that Seaside Park was being cleaned up in readiness for picnics in the near future. All the grass has been cut and trees trimmed up and the bathing sheds cleaned out. The swings and the other devices for the children's amusement have received attention and are in good condition. Further clearing up will be carried out on the extended portion, and the roadway fronting the park cleared up.

Street F. W. Grey drew attention to the state of Waters Street footpath, which he stated ,#as in a shocking condition and practically impassable in wet weather owing to the growth of weeds and rough surface of the path. He considered that it was a waste of time ami material to dump filling for footpath formation without using weed killer to keep the growth in check, as the rich nature of the soil used acted as a fertiliser and when, as in the present case, no binding was used it became impossible tor people to use the path. Complaints we-e received from two ratepayers in Craeroft Street about the state of the footpath, and Mr. Grey oointed out that failure to use

weed killer when laying the paths was responsible for the luxuriant growth on the paths. It was decided to refer the complaint to the works committee for a report.

Building Permits.—During the past two weeks seven building permits to a total value of £1177 were issued.

Albert Street Sewer Extension.—The engineer reported that the sewer extension work in connection with the first section of Albert Street drainage had been completed and the men paid off. Residents in this area can now be notified to connect up with the sewer.

Loans Board.—A letter was received from the Local Government Loans Board stating that the council's application to use the balance of the money remaining from the first section on the commencement of the second section, would be reviewed and the council notified of the board's decision at the earliest opportunity.

Road Maintenance. — The engineer reported that work is being carried out in Luke Street and the surfacing will be finished this week. It" is hoped to get a portion of the road tar-sealed nest week. Three men are also engaged in Portage Road clearing up and laying a kerb for Pukeiti Road.

MANUREWA TOWN BOARD.

The usual fortnightly meeting was held last night, Mr. W. T. Cox, chairman, presiding.

Patrol Grader. —A number of quotations were received from firms, ranging from £430 to £850—the heavier machine weighing about six tons. The consulting engineer, Mr. R. P. Worley, was asked to inspect some of these machines and report to the board.

Highway Maintenance. —On the motion of Mr. E. S. Pegler, it was decided to set up a special committee to go into the question of obtaining financial assistance for the board. He pointed out that the residents were being heavily taxed for the, two miles of concrete road running through the township, and said the Government had shown a sympathetic attitude in alleviating cases where highway taxation pressed unduly hard on property owners.
