CHECKMATING CHEATS.
For some years landlords were the victims of unscrupulous and dishonest tenants. They are now. largely, the victims of the Government through the Fair Rents Act. The landlords' turn has come again with the shortage of houses. As showing how people of spirit can always defend themselves, n recent incident in my immediate neighbourhood well illustriptes. Prospective tenants were enraptured \vith a new house, having had to leave that in which they resided under a magistrate'- order for possession. The owner of the house refused to consider thern not only until they had a clear rent book (they hud declined to pav from the date tliey were gi\cn notice), lint tlint they produce a letter from their bite landlord ,-tatin.L r that thc\ bad left tlic former premise-in good order and -on,lit ion. He accepted 110 rent from iVm until, at t'-'cir ri-k they turned up at the new hoi:-e with their furniture.
