"Hip," state* one reference, is derived from the initials of the words, "Hierosolvma est pordita." meaning "Jerusalem is lost." The story goes that when the <!ern»an knights headed * Jew-hunt in the Middle Ages, they shouted "Hip, liip!" "Hurrah" was derived, according to the authority, from "hu-raj," meaning "to Paradise." Thus the full call of "Hip. hip, hurrah" might l>c translated: "Jerusalem is lost to the infidel, and we are oil the road to Paradise!"
