STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

HORSES FOR TE AROHA. Paluetre, Raepata, Lady Ruler, Bachelor King, Fleetwind and Kelly were due to leave for Te Aroha to-day, and Nun Nicer, Valamito, Kilonsa, Glen Abb, King Neptune, Maeter Brierly and Jack Tar to-morrow. JUMPERS SHOW PROMISE. The novice jumpers, Chief Kinerald and High Star, are making good progress in their education at headquarters. On Tuesday morning thin pair were schooled over six flights of hurdles, and got through their tasks in good style for beginners. Chief Emerald, who had had the benefit of earlier schooling, displayed more confidence at his fences than High Star, though the latter jumped safely and is improving with each lesson. ENGAGED AT TE AROHA. The latest track efforts of Valspear have been good, and he will only need to run up to them to get some money at the Te Aroha meeting. On the first day he is top-weight in the Shaftesbury Handicap, in which event he will be conceding a fair amount of poundage to several smart gallopers, and he has a stiff task ahead of him. However, it is doubtful if Yalspear has ever been fitter than lie is at present, and he can be relied on to keep the opposition busy. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. The following riding engagements are announced for the Te Aroha meeting: — A. Tinker, Paluetre, Raepata, Bachelor King, Black Musk; A. E. Ellie, Flood Tide; C. Walters, Lady Ruler; X. MeKenzie, Valamito; W. Stone, Nun Nicer; H. Wiggins, Master Brierly, Glen Abb, Jack Tar, Johnny Walk; L. Clifford, Kelly, Bonnie Song, International; S. Wilson, Shy; Fleetwind; G. Jenkins, Valspeai ; A. G. Murray, Waitaka. SCORED AT WOODVILLE. Taro, who figures in the Waitoa Handicap at Te Aroha on Saturday, scored a surprise win in the Novice Plate at Woodville on Monday. He is a four-year-old gelding by Cockpit from Huiarau, by King Mark from Te Aupaki, and is therefore related to that good performer Toxeuma. Taro is owned by Mr. F. Ormond, for whom he is trained by W. McKinnon He will be meeting stronger opposition at Te Aroha, and will find his task more difficult than was the case at Woodville. NOT BEING OVERTAXED. Following his success in the Craven Plate at Ricearton, on February 6, Concertpitch has not been required to do much work on the tracks (says a Southern writer). He is a delicate customer that has to be raced sparingly, but the careful treatment he has received may be rewarded when he gets a bit more age. Possibly he will be nominated for Trentham next month, but in any case he is likely to be one of the most discussed local candidates for the Great Easter Handicap.

GRAND NATIONAL WINNERS. Two entries of more than usual interest which are included in the list for the Banks Peninsula meeting are those of the winners of the last Grand National double, Royal Limond and Jolly Beggar. Neither has raced since the August meeting at Riccarton. MAKING SATISFACTORY PROGRESS. The two-year-old Siega. by Siegfried from Ahriehliis, has made good' progress of late and may be given her lirst race at the Franklin meeting next month. This filly shaped well in a sprint over three j furlongs dining the week-end and when .she has had the necessary experience should develop into a useful sort. I DOING WELL AT RICCARTON. Silver Siyht has not been in commission long, but he is rapidly improving, as he showed by a very useful mile which he ran at Kiciarton recently. He is now trained by his owner, Mr. A. •). Martin. Some time ago Silver Sight was operated oil for respiratory trouble, and so far tile results have been splendid. He is engaged at Motukarara. PONTY AND WINO NOMINATED. The Valdhurst trainer M. B. Edwards I has nominated Fonty and Wino for the | Banks Peninsula meeting to be held next week. Ponty has not raced since the Wellington (.'up meeting, and Wino's last appearance was when he finished second to Davolo in the President's Handicap at Geraldine last September. ADDITION TO TEAM. The latest addition to R. S. Bagby'e team at Ellerslie is Surella, who was brought down from Takanini a couple of days ago. Although a winner earlier in the season, Surella has not reached the standard expected, and it will be interesting to see if he does any better now that he is located at headquarters. LIKELY TO IMPROVE. The Surveyor rilly Laud Girl looks none the worse for her short let up and is working as well as ever. She is down to contest the Tuakaii Stakes, a tive-furlong event run at special weight*, at the Franklin meeting early next month. Land Girl has only had one race, but her showing on that occasion was encouraging, and she is a likely improver. TO REAPPEAR NEXT MONTH. After having a spell from racing extending over several months Too ley Street is down to make a reappearance at the Franklin meeting, where he figures in the Pukekohe Handicap, of six furlongs. During the last few weeks this horse has been displaying plenty of dash in his work at EUerslie and looks well, though he may need a race or two before reaching hiii best form. HAS BRIGHT PROSPECTS. Since coming to Ellerslie some weeks ago Elajnage has not been over-taxed, consequently he has put on some condition and looks in good order for engagement*) ahead. So far the son of Posterity has not won a race, though he has been in the money on several occasions against the pick of the two-year-olds that have raced this season. There is no doubt regarding F.lanage s galloping ability and his prospect*) oi winning a race at the autumn meetings appear good. WILL HAVE TO IMPROVE. When Tavern Song won the Putaiuru Stakes at Matamata three weeks ago, further wins were predicted lor the son of Hunting Song, but lie has not been successful since. He was saddled up each day at the Kotorua. meeting, and the best he could do was to finish fourth in the Arawa Park Stakes on the final day. Tavern Song claims an engagement in the Waitoa Handicap at Tc Aroha, and will need to show considerable improvement in order to win that event. DOING GOOD WORK. Fleetwind continues to tram on in a satisfactory manner and is displaying her customary speed on the track. Last Saturday the daughter of Whirlwind was responsible for a good gallop over six furlongs, running the distance in fast time. As Fleetwind usually races best at this period of the season it would not surprise to see her making a return t<> the winning list shortly. She is engaged at the Franklin and Te Aroha meetiiu

and is worth keeping in mind for those fixtures. WILL WIN MORE MONEY. Owing to the hard state of the ground at headquarters, Valinint lias been doing the bulk of his work on the tan track and is getting through his tasks in a satis- i factor} manner. He ha« been nominated , for the Waiuku Handicap, to be run over j seven furlongs and 22 yards at the Franklin ! meeting, and if he goes to the post he will not be neglected. At his best Valinint is capable of holding his own against • any of the hacks racing at the present time, and when he reaches his true form again more money ehould be in store for him. MAKING GOOD HEADWAY. The stablemateti Droll and Marjory Daw are going on the right way in tbeir , preparation under P. Scally's supervision, and Droll looks all the better for her racing at the Takapuna meeting last niontli. This filly xhowed promising speed ] in each of her contests at the above meet- ! ing, and when she has had more experience should be capable of paying her way. She will probably make her next appearance j at the Franklin meeting on March (i. > Marjory Daw has not been overtaxed of j late, though she has freshened up nicely. ! ami hit out very satisfactorily in a gallop on Tuesday morning. BRED THE RIGHT WAY. Conietariuin, who finished fourth in the Trial Stakes on the first day of the Wai- ; kato meeting, is a promising novice who ; is likely to do better with experience. He ; is a well-bred gelding by Surveyor from Lady Comet, by Day Comet from Lady Lilii. The last-named also produced those good jumpers. Tenacious and Billy Boy, and another of her progeny was Whetunui, who won a number of races on the Hat some seasons ago. As a number of fne progeny of Surveyor and Day Comet have made a name for themselves as junipers it would not surprise to see C.'oinetarium being given an opportunity to make good in that department later on. SON OF BALBOA. The Winton Cup winner, Ashaway, had previously won only two small laces in the south. Recently he was made fourth favourite for the Dunedin Cup. in which he was prominent for a mile and a quarter, only to drop out of the contest through getting his tongue over the bit. Ashaway is a four-year-old gelding by Balboa from Some Form, by Some Boy 11. from Fairform, by Beniform from Satisfaction, by Birkenhead from Content, by Dreadnought. Faiiform is a sister to the well-known performers of a few seasons ago, Rin Tin Tin and C'harmaine. and she is a halfsister to the Dunedin Cup and Great Autumn Handicap winner Tauramai. Ashaway is trained at Riverton by A. McKay.
