ENGLAND V. VICTORIA.
NO PLAY ON THIRD BAY. GREGORY AND HASSETT PRAISED. MELBOURNE, February 22. ' No play took place to-day in the cricket match between England and Victoria, at Melbourne. The wicket was covered, but the ground war; soaked by heavy rain during the morning, and after an inspection aftei lunch it was decided not to play. The cricketing writer of the '"Sydney Morning Herald." in commenting on the first two days of the match, save: — Gregory's play lacked some of the dash p£ his century innings againet England in the first Victorian match, but his defence was wonderfully sound. He appeared to aim at developing his stroke play and he was more versatile than in his" previous innings. A satisfactory feature was that he was not content to play back, but left.the crease, using hie feet to Verity, •who had the field spread to stop hard drives. Lee also batted ■well, but the most attractive innings of the match eo far ■wae played by the consistent 22-year-old left-hander Haseett, who in hie first appearance against the Englishmen impreeeed them by his artistry and confidence. The English attack wae varied, bnt lacked sting. Robine was careful not to overwork the Test bowlers, especially Voce.
