RACING AT TE RAPA.

SOME SURPRISES.

THE WAIKATO MEETING

SECOND DAY'S EVENTS. RESPKCTFtL WINS VKKCOE j « i The Wuik-ito Racing Club concluded their summer meeting at Te Kaj.a yesicrday in fine weather, and there was again a large attendance, thoujrh not up to that of Saturday. The traik was fast, an>i tiicru was some "rood racing , . the Uvo-year-'ild event, the Eureka Handicap, providing one of the most exciting finishes seen for some time, the tirsi four horses going over the line almost on terms. There were some surprises, Far Land.. Respectful, Day Wind and Trilliareh all returning double figures on the win machine. During the day the sum of £31,980 10/ was put through the totalisator, compared with £22.0ti4 10/ for the second day of the previous summer fixture, an increase of £0016. This made a total for the meeting of £76,613 10/, against £51,791, an increase of £24,822 10/. The Principal Event. The chief selections in the Vercoe Handicap were Shy and King Xeptune, but once again victory went to an outsider. Respectful finishing fast on the outside to score by a long neck. Lagoon was first to break the line, but Impasto quickly ran to the front, 'and was in charge along the back from Royal Secret, Dark Shadow, King Neptune, Star Artist, Sweet Rose, Respectful, Shy,, Sinking Fund and Lagoon. The order across the top was Impasto, Dark Shadow, Star Artist, Royal Secret, King Neptune, Shy and Respectful. Sweet Rose moved up smartly at this stage, and attended Impasto into the straight, then following Shy, Dark Shadow, Royal Secret and Sinking Fund. Shy was in front at the distance, but was unable to withstand challenges from Respectful and Triune, victory going to the former by a long neck, with Bhy a length and a half away third. Royal Secret was fourth, and then followed Sinking Fund, Gay Talkie, Mazir, Impasto, Gay Rose and King Neptnne, who had been eaaed up owing to bleeding. A Blanket Finish. The Eureka Handicap, in which the favourites were Wildflower, Airam, Royal Vaals and Trilliarch, provided a wonderful finish, not more than a length separating the first four horses. Raceline slewed round at the start, and took no part in the contest, the early leaders being Airam, Wildflower and Trilliarch. Trilliarch then ran through and was in front across the top from Airam, Royal Bachelor, Wildflower, Nuclei, Pantoon and Royal Vaals. Trilliarch was about a length and a half clear as they straightened up for home, being attended by Airam, Royal Bachelor, Royal Vaals and Wildflower. The field closed on the leader in the run home, and in a blanket finish Trlfliarch hung on to beat Royal Bachelor by a head, with Airam a short head away next, land Royal Vaals practically in a line next, after getting disappointed in the straight. Wildflower, Pantoon, Forest Acre and Nuclei were next. The Hack Cup. Most support was accorded King Theo, International, and Lady Siegfried in the Waikato Hack Cup. Valrent w«s first to break the line from Tutor, Gay Streak, / and King Theo,""but Gay Streak soon took charge to be in the van across the top from King Theo, Valrent, Tutor, Racemosus, Racette, Lady Siegfried, International and Black Musk. The order into the straight waa Gay Streak, Valrent, King; Theo, Racemosus, Lady. Siegfried, Tutor, Racette, Black Musk and International on the outside. Valrent then took charge, and stalling off a strong challenge by International got the verdict by a neck with Lady Sieg- • fried only a head away third. Sunny Downs, King Theo, Tutor and Racette finished as named. The Open Sprint. , Triune was the only defection from the Flying Handicap, for which Deficrl and Whirling were most fancied, whil* Round Up wa* next in request. Rounc Up was soon in front from Mnngacre Deficit, Mata Hari, Boughal, Wahin* ■ Beihi, Whirling and Gold Mission. Deficii had -taken charge before a couple of fur longs had been covered, with Mungacre Bound Up, Mata Hari, Boughal, Wahin< Keihi and Whirling next. They cairn round the turn in practically the sami order, Deficit being well clear. However Whirling came with a great run half wai down, and heading Deficit held on t< beat him by a neck, with* Round IT] * length and a half away third. Mung acre, Gold Mission, Boughal, Wahinc Beihi and Mata Hari were next. The JKnal Event. The meeting concluded with th< Hnntly Hack Handicap, for which Era dale, Calcutta and Besiege were in moei ' request. Besiege .was a little slow of the mark, Killadar, Calcutta, Erndali and Blackman leading outi -Bowever Calcutta soon headed them,, and. wai well clear of Erndale, Blackman, Besiege Winlooa, Trouvaille/and Killadar crone i ing the top. Calcutta still held a gooc lead at the home turn from Erndale Blackman, Winlona, Besiege and Kill* ' dar, but a furlong from home the fielc closed on him, and in a good finisl Winlona got the decision by a neck fron Besiege, who beat Killadar by hall a length. Then followed Blackman, Cal cntta, Trouvaille, Erndale and Fonl Acre. Later results were:— VEBCOE HANDICAP of £350. One mile. 10 —7— RESPECTFUI* Mk g, Racefnl— Prlneeea Charming(Mr. A. P. Brady), Q.
