Other revenue items were: Water by meter, £0707; cemeteries, £27f>8; heavy traffic licences, etc., £1303; share of petrol tax, £1771. The expenditure was as follows; Interest and sinking fund ami debenture redemption, £10,047; etreet*, £10,635; waterworks, £4700; Hospital Board, £310ti; salaries (including all departments), £2495; municipal building alterations, office equipment and furnwhing, £2038; Fire Board, £628; War Memorial, £202. Tho year began with a debit balance of £7485 12/0 and closed with one of £9719 17/. The Mayor, Mr. J. Park, pointed out that the main reason for the addition to the overdraft at March 31 was that tho previous council had undertaken a comparatively big road-sealing programme out of revenue. When hie council came into office it wae found that a number of the streets had been sealed with only the first coat. The additional work necesMiry in theee streets was carried out by hie council and further road works embarked upon in order to assist in providing work on standard rates of pay for the local unemployed. Thus a ernn of £10,035 wae spent on etreete and footpath works during the financial year, whereas £8000 wae the allocation for the year in this respect. Further, said Mr. Park in conclusion, the overdraft included a sum of £1035 *pent up to March 31 laet on the recreation reserve scheme and this had been reimbureed to the council out of the £15,000 loan raised recently to carry out thie scheme. Tho balance-sheet was adopted and signed, and the office staff was congratulated on th* prompt presentation.
