RENTAL REMITTED.

TOWN BOARD'S ATTITUDE CHAIRMAN'S CASTING VOTE.

On the casting vote of the chairman the Manurewa Town Board last night decided against reversing its recent decision to remit £15 of the annual rental of the local bowling dub. Considerable public interest was shown, and many ratepayers were present in the board room. The question was raised in a notice of motion by Mr. J. H. Edwards, who asked the board to reconsider the position and to weigh the interests of the ratepayers and the need of essential services in the district. It was pointed out by a. member of the bowling club that the remission of rental, as compared with last year, was only £5, but that the board had agreed to forego an increase, in addition, of £10 in the rates. During the discussion reference was made to the fact that the bowlers had spent a substantial sum. amounting to £470 in two years, in the improvement of the area, and that the maintenance of a green by their efforts was of much benefit to the district, and was more economical from the ratepayers' point of view than the provision of a municipal green. All appeal for more favourable treatment of other sports was made by Mr. IC. S. IVgler, who said he had been a foundation member of the bowling club and also of the town board. Tiie voting on the motion was:—For, Messrs. Edwards, Pegler and H. R. Maxwell; against, Messrs. W. T. Cox (chairman), W. ,1. Ferguson, T. S. Gray and H. W. Hood.
