THE OPENING DAY.

SUCCESS OF SCOIXAND. OPEN" SPRINT TO WHIRLING. The Waikato Racing Club's summer meeting opened at Te Rapa on Saturday under ideal conditions. The track was in excellent order, and there was a particularly large attendance. The chief event, the Waikato Cup, saw the defeat of the favourite division, the eighth fancy. Scotland, scoring in a great finish from Lagoon. Whirling annexed the sprint, while Debkam ajid Wiklflower were also in fine form. During the day the totalisator handled the sum of £44,033, compared with £28,826 10/ last year, an increase ot £15,806 10/.

The Chief Event. Fourteen candidates went to the post in the Storey Memorial Handicap, the chief event of the day, and in a good betting ri.ce most money came for Mazir, Master Brierly and Shy, but they failed to get in the money. Tybalt led past the stands from Royal Appellant, Lagoon, Gay Broney and Dark Shadow, with Velocipede, Tiger Gain, Shy and Vera Acre next. Going out of the straight Velocipede stumbled and came back on Shy, whoee rider was thrown. Lagoon was then in charge from Royal Appellant and Gay Broney, the trio being bunched, and then came Tybalt, Vera Acre, Tiger Gain, Scotland and Dark Shadow, with Mazir at the rear. Royal Appellant was in the van crossing the top, with Gay Broney, Vera Acre, Lagoon and Tiger Gain handy, and then came Tybalt, Scotland, Dark Shadow and Tout le Monde. There was little change into the straight, where Mazir moved up into seventh place and Tybalt also improved his position. In a thrilling finish Lagoon ran through and appeared the winner, but Scotland finish<Ml gamely to beat her by a short head, with Tybalt a neck away. Gay Broney was fourth, and then came Tout le Honde, Master Brierly, Tiger Gain, Royal Appellant and Vera Acre.

All the Way. Backers were again astray when they elected Merial and Haile Boy favourites in the Linley Handicap. However Merial's supporters lost all chance at the start, as she whipped across when the harrier lifted and lost a lot of ground. The Vamp, Thangilamba and Gay Egypt were also slow to find their feet. May Song was first out, but Jan Ridd quickly assumed command, to lead across the top from Surella, May Song, Diacquedoon, Little Artist, Sir Tommy, Tosh and Fox Moth. Diacquedoon then moved up smartly and followed Jan Ridd into the straight, the pair being Attended by Little Artist, Surella, Sir Tommy and Prince Kangi. Staying on solidly Jan Ridd went on to beat Little Artist by a length, Prince Bangi coming home well in third place two lengths away. May Song was fourth, and then followed Surella, Waitaka, Haile Boy, Tosh, Diacquedoon, Gay Egypt and Merial-

A Close Finish. The Puketaha Handicap attracted a good field and when the final figures were adjusted most money was invested upon Kilonsa and Debham, and they fought out a very close finish, victory going to the latter by a head. Mangukaha was first to break the line and led along the back, from Kilberis, Debham, Star Artist, Kilonsa, Pukeko and Loombination. Debham then took charge and wae the pilot across the top from Mangnkaha, Kilonsa, Pukeko, Star Artist, Bonny Gay, Black Friar and Loombination. The order into the straight was Debham, Mangukaha, Pukeko, Kilonsa, Kilberie and Black Friar. Kilonsa then challenged but failed to reach Debham by a head, with Gay Rose finishing fast two lengths away. Pukeko was fourth and then came Black Friar, Star Artist, Mainland, Tradesman and Bonny Gay. The Open Sprint.

Bougbal and Star Artist were withdrawn from the President's Handicap, in which most support was accorded Golden Sbeila, Triune, Deficit and Whirling, the last-named coming through over the last furlong to win decisively. Triune was slow away, and early Whirling, Golden Sheila and Impasto wef'e prominent. Golden Sheila then ran to the front to pilot the field across the top from Deficit, Impasto, Whirling, Mata Hari, Clessamor and Bound Up. Deficit then joined Golden Sheila and this pair were attended into the straight by Whirling, Impasto, Cleesamor and Mata Hari. Deficit was in front at the distance, but was unable to withstand a challenge from Whirling, who won by a length. King Key finished at a great rate* to dead heat with Golden Sheila for the minor money. Then followed Sound Up, Impasto, Triune, Gold Mission, Prince Acre, Wahine Beihi, Clessamor and Mata Hari. The Vmozite Scores. Backers went strongly for Black Musk and King H>eo in the Beereacourt Handicap, and the former duly won after being the leaner at the home turn. Gay Streak was first to move, and he led early from 'Trouvaille, Erndale and Black Musk. Crossing the top Gay Streak just led Winlona, with Racemosus next, and then following Killadar, Trouvaille, Lady Siegfried and Black' Musk. The last-named then moved up fast, and was first into the straight from Erndale, Gay Streak, Winlona, Racemosus and Lady Siegfried. Staying on solidly, Black Musk went on to win by a length and a quarter from Erndale, who beat Racemosus by three-quarters of a length. King Theo came home well in fourth place, and then followed Lady Siegfried, Winlona, Gay Streak and Trouvaille. Later results were: — STOREY MEMORIAL HANDICAP Of £500.
