HOLIDAY ENDS.

BACKBLOCKS CHILDREN.

WEEK IN THE CITY

After the most wonderful holiday of their lives, a party of 17 North Auckland baekblocks children who had spent a week in Auckland, left this morning for their homes. The holiday was organised by the children's department of the Auckland "Star." Miss L. A. Wilkie, head teacher of the Waingakau School, was in charge of the children on the train. Yesterday the children were taken to the Mangere aerodrome, where each was I taken for a flight over the city. For most of them it was the first time they had seen an aeroplane, much less had a ride in one. Perhaps this was the greatest thrill of a whole week packed with thrills. It wim natural that all should have been reluctant to leave «.nd return to a drab ordinary existence. This is the common feeling when a holiday comes to an end; but as one of them said, "Now that I have had this wonderful holiday, I am quite ready to go back to milk cows again—and there are 60 of them, too!" The greatest joy of the whole trip, said the editor of the children's department, Mr. L. S. Abbott, was to see the way in which the whole party, shy to begin with, had lost their diffidence. It was evident that their vision had been widened, an experience which would do great good at a time when their minds were so impressionable. Mr. Abbott said that those who had subscribed to make the holiday possible could rest assured that their generosity had not been misplaced.
