The fields will be large, and, with class well represented, there should be some excellent racing. Betting will be on the win and place system. Ideal weather prevailed for the opening of the summer meeting of the Poverty Bay Turf Club this afternoon, and there was a large attendance. The track was in good order, and some close finishes were provided. During the day the sum of £5384 10/ was put through the machine, compared with £2794 10/ for the corresponding day last season, an increase of £2390. In the First Hurdles Holme Fell took charge from the start, and led over the first fence, where Royal Mimic fell. Holme Fell led the field till half a mile from home, where Sumnieihill and Jazz King took charge, jumping the last fence together, but in the run to the poet Jazz King held on best to win by a head, with Holme Fell three lengths away. Minnow, Quaint and Tractile were first to show out in the Telegraph Handicap, followed by Royal Minstrel and Ua la, while Gay Hunter got the worst of the start. Along the back Ua la was in command from Tractile, Royal Minstrel and Minnow. Entering the straight Quaint moved up to the leaders, and Gay Hunter also joined in. In a good finish Royal Minstrel just got up to beat Gay Hunter by a head, with Tractile a neck away, followed by Flying Mimic, Quaint and Ua la. Fourteen paraded for the Maiden Scurry, and from a good start Hunting Spi was first to show out, from Hunting Step, Ihu and Hunting Crop. The order remained the same to the straight, with Hunting Spi still showing the way to Hunting Step, Ihu, Sham, Mahala and Jaybird. Jaybird came fast half-way down the straight, but Hunting Spi had tihe race in hand, to win by a head from Hunting Step, with Jaybird a length and a half away third, followed by Shani, Ihu, Mahala and Joe Louis. With nine scratching* in the big race, the Sunderland Stakes, only four horses went to the post. Legatee and Pennycontequick were soon in front, from Wasteland and Bothwell. Half a mile from home Bothwell moved in behind the leaders, and entering the straight Periny-

comequick and Legatee swung out, Wasteland taking the lead momentarily, but in the run to the post Pennycomequick drew out, to beat Legatee by a length, with three lengths to Bothwell. In the Summer Hack Handicap there »were five starters, Luculltte Lad being a warm favourite. Happy Hunting took the lead from the start, followed by Small Boy, Luculluß Lad, Silver River and : Wananga. This order was maintained to , the straight, where Wananga began to , move up on the outside. In the run home : Happy Hunting drew away to win by two i lengths from Lucullus Lad, with Wananga j a length and a half away third, followed by Silver River and Small Boy.

In the Flying Handicap Black Thread was first to show out from De Friend, Gasman, Hunting Mars and Lordly Knight. The order was the same to the straight, but once straightened up Hunting Mars came through to join Black Thread. Dp Friend and Gasman. In the I run home Hunting Mans finished strongly to beat De Friend by three-quarters of a j length, with Black Thread half a length further back, followed by Lordly Knight and Gasman last. A good field faced the starter for t/he Harbour Handicap. Perfect Lady was first away, followed by Blygain, Tycoon. Quaint and Tauniri. At the bend before the straight Taupiri was in second place to Perfect Lady, the pair being followed by Tycoon and Quaint. Once straightened up Perfect Lady was still showing the way to Tycoon, Taupiri and Brown Lap. In the run to the post Brown Lap finished well, to win by half a length from Tycoon, with Perfect Lady a similar distance away third, followed by Quaint, Blvgain and Collision.
