Electric Drive Replaced in U.S. Vessels. MORE SPACE AFFORDED. WASHINGTON", February 5. The Navy Depnrlinoiit announces that the two new United States battleships, which arc contemplated, will lie powered by steam turbines with mechanical reduction gears instead of electric drive. The decision to return to steam was readied after exhaustive studies of speed, tonnage and other factors. The. elimination of motors and generators will mean a saving of 20 per cent of space and 2.3 per cent of weight, and this will be utilised to provide more speed, bigger guns, heavier armour, better compartmentation and additional facilities for aeroplanes, radio and other equipment. Rear-Admiral Cook. Chief of the Bureau of Aeronautics, states that by 1042, the Xavy will have reached full treaty strength.
