GRAFTON BRIDGE.
WORK OF REPAIR. WEIGHT ON SCAFFOLDING. PROTECTION AGAINST JUMPS. Repairs to Grafton Bridge are going ahead steadily, though it will be some IS months before the work will be finished and the speed restrictions relating to the bridge removed. The city engineer, Mr. .T. Tyler, said yesterday" that the weight of" the two bridge spans was now' entirely supported by the scaffolding. Tlie two southern 'girders were being cut away and the steel replaced. The concreting of the steel would be done shortly. The new piers had been concreted up to the height of the girders.
Mr. Tyler added that the material for the protective railing to be built along the bridge in order to prevent persons leaping to death below hud been ordered. It would be only a matter of weeks before the equipment arrived and the work was begun. The council authorised the work at the meeting on December 17, when the finaly adopted. These provided for the erection of a close-mesh, galvanised wire fence, four feet high, to be placed vertically on the parapet. The cost was estimated to be about .iinOO.
