FIVE YEAR PLAN
£3,500,000 INVOLVED. POST OFFIQE IMPKOVEMEXTS. A fivo : ycar plan, involving an expenditure of. £3,500,000 for extending- and improving- telephone, ■ telegraph and postal facilities is being- planned bv the Postmaster-General, the Hon. F.Jones.' The Minister stated in an interview in Wellington that the weric would lie maintained at an even rate over the period of five years, with no "boom and burst" methods. Improvements to existing post office -facilities, including the Telephone and Telegraph departments, would be continued all over -;he country, in addition,'to the building of several metropolitan post offices. Tenders would shortly be called for the first portion of: tlie Christchlirch general pns.t office, a five-storey building, the plans of which were near completion.
Hans were also nearly completed for the new Invercargill post office, and it was hoped that before the Xew Year was out a new post office for Xew Plymouth, where 'facilities were very poor", would be completed.
It would mean, said Jlr. Jones, that a. large number of extra tradesmen would bo employed, and it was planned to keep up the high level of employment from year to-year.
