Mr. T. C. Hobbs-Jones presided yesterday at a meeting of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, when it .was decided to arrange a visit to New Zealand by three Australian champion swimmers, R. Newbiggen (Sydney), and Dorothy Green and Evelyn de Lacy (both of Perth), for the purpose of promoting races, in March, between them and Dominion champions.
Mies de Lacy had already accepted an invitation several weeks previously, but her visit was postponed on account of the outbreak of infantile paralysis. The flection of Newbiggen was made by Mr. J. Speedy, secretary to the Amateur Swimming Union of Australia, whom the Auckland Centre had authorised to choose a swimmer with the necessary qualifications. An invitation had not been extended to Miss Green, but, impressed by her performances at the Australian championships recently, the management committee decided that she was worthy of selection. Junior champion of Australia, Newbiggen described as a swimmer of amazing ability. He is 15 years of age has registered 61 2-5s for 110 yards, 2.21 for 220 yards and 5.15 for 440 yards. He is 6ft 2m in height. Miss Green gained victories in the 220 yards and 400 metres ladies' championship of Australia. In these she defeated Miss de Lacy, the Olympic representative, whose records she lowered to 2.32 1-5 and 5.45 3-5 respectively. The former time placed Miss Green in the front rank of. the fastest lady furlong swimmer? ilj the world. The 110 yards ii-- won hv' Miss de Lacy in 695, Miss Green finishing second. , The secretary, Mr. J. R. Miller, stated that southern centres had been offered appearances by the visitors. Several had. together with a number of clubs outside Auckland, expressed interest in the proposal and requested to be informed of the guarantee sum. The committee agreed that the tour should be organised whether or not' otneir bodies decided to co-operate. Championships Postponed. It. was decided to postpone the Auckland senior championship carnival from February 23 until March 2. This action was necessitated because the Farmers' Trading Company, Limited, had secured tne lepid Batns for its annual carnival on the former date. \ An application from the Otahuhu Club for-permission: to conduct its harbour race at lamaki on February 14 wa« granted. Provided the names of the officials were furnished, the Waiuku Club was granted Permission to hold a carnival on March The Eastern Suburbs Club asked to be allowed to decide its annual harbour race for the Worrall Cup on March 7 instead of on February 21. The request was granted. The Masterton Club inquired whether Mona Ley don would be permitted to attend its carnival at Masterton on March 6 Consideration was deferred until definite arrangements had been made in conneetion with the visit to Auckland of Green" yn de " Lacy and Dorothy
