RAILWAY OPERATIONS.
CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR,

A working profit of £119,481 j„ shown in the railway accounts for the four l weeks ended January 2, an abstract of which appears in the Gazette to-niglit. This result, which includes a substantial part of the Christmas and New Year holiday period traffic represents a decrease of £49,091, compared with the corresponding period last year. The gross receipts amounted to £641,542, or £43,324 more than last vear. Expenses at £522,061 were £92,415 higher. The operating account for the North Island shows a revenue of £344,550, an increase of £22,119. The expenses were £278,326, or £47,427 higher. Net revenue at £66,224 was £25,308 less than a year ago. In the South Island receipts were £216.014 and expenses £196,389, these amounts being £9310 and £31,876 respectively greater than the corresponding figure last year. Net revenue decreased by £22,566 to £19,025. The balance of nftscellaneous revenue was £33,632, a decrease of £1217. Gross revenue under this head was £80,978 and gross expenditure £47,346. Revenue for the 40 weeks from April 1 to January 2 amounted to £5,602,240, an increase of £574,598. Expenses, totalling £5,093,631, were £665.944 higher. Net revenue, at £508,609, decreased by £91,346.
