MISSING CATTLE.

ALLEGATIONS OF THEFT. FARMER ON TRIAL. The trial of a North Auckland farmer, Arthur Reginald Phillips (Mr. Wylie, of Kaikohe), aged 61, on four charges of cattle stealing wae continued at the Supreme Court to-day before Mr. Justice Callan and a jury. Mr. V. N. Hubble prosecuted. In all, 24 witnesses are to be called, and;the trial is not likely to finish before to-morrow. Accused is charged with stealing a cow, valued at £3, the property of Albert Hunce Pearson Marris; three black heifers, of a total value of £11, belonging to Dick Pehi; and a Jersey heifer and bull, valued at £4, which were allegedly removed from the property of Mrs. Tiria Pchi. The offences were alleged to have taken place between about June 21 and October 10. All the animals with the exception of the one in the flrat charge have been recovered, but it is alleged that the head of the beast which Marris lost was found after a tangi near Rawene. Evidence was given this morning by Dick Pehi concerning the disappearance of two heifers. The witness said that •some time after he had purchased them he saw them on the road with a brand which he thought was that of the accused. The case is proceeding.
