HISTORY IN THREAD.
Two hundred women have completed a five-year task at Winchester Cathedral by refurnishing the choir with cushions and kneelers. They have produced embroidery which is expected to last at least 300 years. The women learnt from one another, made their own designs and stitched day after day. Many of them collaborated in making the large cushions. The history of the cathedral has been recorded in woollen thread. Medallions .worked; into the designs record major events. The connection of the diocese with shipping is indicated by a cushion design showing a liner leaving Southampton Harbour—with tug* and aeroplanes. Maps of the Channel Islands —they are part of the diocese — form aother design, and the New Forest is represented by a pastoral view. Altogether, the women have made 360 kneelers, 96 alms bays, 62 stall cushions. 34 bench, cushions with 56-medallions, 18 yards of ornamental border for five communion riil kneelers, cushions for the bishop's throne, and two large cushions, with the Royal; crests, ,df<>r the use of judges of aiieizes; r ■•/» • ,
