EDUCATION REPORT.
"FAR-REACHING QUESTION."
BOARD'S SPECIAL MEETING
The Auckland Education Board will hold a special meeting on Tuesday evening, February IC, to consider the education proposals contained in the Atmore Report, and now submitted by the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, for consideration by the various interested bodies.
"This promises to be the most farreaching question that has been put before the board for some time," said the chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells, in introducing the matter yesterday. "It will mean the reorganisation of the educational system of the Dominion. A Parliamentary committee has been set up to deal with the matter and I can envisage great changes." Mr. Welle pointed out that one matter that would be considered would be the elimination of the education boards as they existed at the present, and their replacement with large boards that would control primary, (secondary and technical education. " They would be reconstituted with representatives of different sections of educational interest, who would be elected in an entirely different way. There would be no't only representatives of school committees, but appointees of local bodies, the Government, and teachers.
"If the proposals of the commission are adopted it may mean that our treasury department will be wiped out," said Mr. Wells, "and all salaries paid directly from Wellington. Our architects department may also be wiped out, and their work taken over by the Public Works Department."
It was decided to call the special meeting, and a committee consisting of Messrs. Wells, W. J. Campbell, C. R. Miinro, and the secretary, Mr. Dunlop, was appointed to prepare a' report on the proposals for submission to members.
