DICING FOR BIBLES.
The ceremony of throwing a dice for Bibles has taken place annually at «*t Ives, Huntingdonshire, for over 250 i«?- rS " Jnd ? 1 . 1, ™ WU1 ' ***** August, 1670, Dr. Robert Wilde, of Oundle (Northants), bequeathed the sum of £50 x> St. Ives, with directions that it should be invested so that it might yield the sum of £3 per annum, to be spent each year on the purchase of Bibles. The money is obtained from the rent of an orchard known as ir ßible Orchard." While six Anglicans and the same numbe of Nonconformist children take part in the dice-throwing, six children only —three Anglicans and three Nonconformists—receive a Testament each year. The vicar of the parish receives 10/ for preacbinjr a sermon on "the excellency of the Holy Scriptures." and the parish clerk is paid one shilling. --■ . . —
