ELLERSLIE AFFAIRS.

COMMUNITY LIGHTING. SPORTS AREA IMPROVEMENTS. A community lighting scheme was discussed by the Ellerslie Town Board last night, when a deputation from the Ellerslie Business Men's Association stated that it was in favour of some project to light up the main street shopping area between the municipal building and the station entrance ramps. The deputation eaid that the association was prepared to meet the cost of such a scheme, but would require the support of the board in making arrangements. The board decided to ascertain the cost of the scheme anil confer later with the association. The chairman of the board, Mr. H. J. White, agreed that the responsibility of the cost of the scheme would have to be met by the association, which -would need to be an incorporated body.

A special committee reported oh the scale of charges and improvements to the recreation reserve for sports meetings. The report was adopted. It was recommended that two extra floodlights be installed at a cost of £35 10/, and an ordinary light in the dressing shed. It also urged that the fence on the northern side be set back. The proposed charges were: For greyhound racing meetings, fl 12/ for day-time, and £2 for nights; Rugby League football on alternate Saturdays from May 1, £9; athletics, club evening meetings, 12/6; nights (with authority to charge), £2; day-time, £1 10/.

Though not unanimously, the board decided to close its offices on Saturday. By notice of motion a previous resolution requiring' the office to be opened for 5* daye weekly was rescinded, two members, Meeers. S. Somerfield and H. Lan Simeon dissenting.

The postmaster advised that it had been arranged to make a mail collection at the Ellerslie post office on Sundays at 3 p.m. to connect with the Limited , express for the South the same evening.
