SALES TAX TOTAL. HIGHEST MONTHLY FIGURE. AUCKLAND CUSTOMS REVENUE Sales tax figures in Auckland during the month of January reached a new high level. Still rising on the wave of prosperity, the returns reached a total of £5G,757, surpassing the monthly record achieved in December (£55,253) and showing a £10,000. increase over the figure for January, 1030. Returns from I this tax provide a good barometer of internal trade 111 general merchandise. Total Customs revenue for the expiring month, £322,825, exceeded that of I the corresponding month last year, but j a decrease was shown in- motor spirit and tyre duty. Excise on beer was also I less. [ The Collector of Customs in Auckland I supplied the "Star" to-day with a table | which set out and compared the January returns under the various headings.
