BRITAIN LASHED
Damage Wrought by Sea and Land. GRAVESEND SHIP RESCUE. British Official Wireless. (Received 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, January 29. A cold, north-easterly gale continues and the coasts of the British Isles are being lashed by heavy seas. Considerable damage has been done in several parts, notably in' Wales, where seas flooded the streets in some coastal resorts. . Snow fell in London and the- streets of Dover are swept by snowstoims. Shipping is suffering a severe buffeting. After being holed through fouling the cable of an anchored German steamer . o£f Gravesend and narrowly missing a collision with a ferry' boat, 1 * the small Dutch motor sloop Wiljau drifted ashore. The captain, his': wife and child and crew were rescued. Road conditions in many parts pf the country are exceptionally bad, and in Dorset many motorists found it necessary to abandon their cars for the night and. seek , shelter in roadliouses. Occupants of a bus which was snowed up in a desolate area on Exmoor had great difficulty in reaching shelter. Many roads throughout the country are unusable or. dangerous for traffic, although main roads generally have been kept clear.
