RACING AT ELLERSLIE.

TAKAPUNA CLUB.

THE OPENING DAY. RAIN FALLS CONTINUALLY. KNIGHT OF AUSTRALIA'S CUP. Continuous rain marred the opening day of the Ta ka puna Jockey Club's summer meeting, and there was only a poor attendance. The track was holding. The chief event, the Takapuna Cup, was won by the sixth favourite, Knight of Australia, who went one of his best races, and won comfortably. Tenth in public demand Mata Hari gained a narrow victory in the Zealandia Handicap, and returned over a quarter of a century on the win machine. The Wynyard Plate was annexed by the warm favourite Kilonsa. Betting was quiet throughout, and the totalisator handled tlie sum of £ 19.070 10/ compared with £24,.">01 10/ last year, a decrease of €5431. Outsider Scores In Cup.

The race for the Takr.puna Cup was run in blinding rain, and it was difficult to pick lip the horses as they went along the back. Lagoon, Mazir and Dark Shadow were in most demand in the betting. Lagoon shot to the front as the field raced out of the straight from Kelly, Knight of Australia, Gay Broney and Dark Shadow, with Gay Talkie next. Con Fuoco and Mazir were at the tail of the field. Along the back Knight of Australia had run up behind Lagoon, and this pair was making play at this stage from Gay Broney, Dark Shadow, Kelly, Gay Talkie and Mazir. There was no alteration in the order of the loaders at the half-mile, and Knight of Australia, who had commenced to move up approaching the turn, was in charge, with Lagoon as they levelled up for home in front of Mazir, who had also ' improved his position, and then followed Kelly and Gay Broney. Revelling in the going, Knight of Australia went on to win by a length and three-quarters from Kelly, with Gay Broney a length away. Lagoon faded out to be fourth in front . of Con Fuoco and Dark Shadow, then ■ coming Mazir and Gay Talkie about five ' lengths away. 1 The Topweight Scores. Nine juveniles competed in the Calliope Handicap, and in a good betting race the best backed were Nuclei, Bachelor King and Airam. Bachelor King, jumping out smartly, led from end to end to win in decisive style. Early Bachelor King was out two lengths from Nuclei, and Land Girl. Crossing the top the order remained unchanged and coming to the straight Feldberg was just in front of Bachelor King, with Land Girl handy, in front of Nuclei and Miss Appellant, with Airam moving up very fast. Nothing had a chance with Bachelor King, and he went on to wiir by two lengths from Nuclei, who beat Airam by a head. Land Girl was right up fourth, and then came Feldberg, Manatere and Miss Appellant. The Plate. Nine "defections from the Wynyard Plate reduced the field to seven, and when backers got busy they made Kilonsa a warm first fancy, while good money was invested upon Rollicker and Rulette. The favourite began well and was always handy, till just before reaching the home turn, where she had dropped back into fifth place. Once in line for the post she came with a rare burst to win going away. Rulette and Jack Tar followed her early, with Mainland, Rollicker and Cappy next n-rl Sergia last. Jack Tar was about half a length ahead of Kilonsa crossing the top, with Mainland' and Rulette-next, with Rollicker and Cappy moving up behind them. Jack Tar showed the way into the straight from Mainland and Rollicker, with Cappy and Kilonsa handy. The last-named then put in her run and, overhauling the leaders half a furlong from the post, went on to win by three-quarters of a length from Mainland, with Rollicker a neck .away third. Jack Tar was fourth, and then came Rulette and Cappy, with Sergia last. The Open Sprint. Sweet Rose and Lornacre were withdrawn from the Zealandia Handicap leaving a good field of twelve sprinters, in which the public went for Armacourt, Galilee and Tybalt. Mata Hari,. who hit the front early, was never afterwards headed, although she had nothing to spare from Tybalt at the finish. King Ford and Mata Hari were the early leaders, but Mata Hari soon ran to the front, to lead across the top from Whirling, Mungacre, King Ford and Galilee. As they raced to the turn Mata Hari was still showing out from Whirling, with Mungacre handy, King Ford next, and then followed Triune and Armacourt. At the distance Mata Hari was going well, when Tybalt flashed up on the rails, and in a great finish Tybalt nearly got up, and only the judge could separate them, the verdict going to Mata' Hari by a head. Mungacre was threequarters of a length away, third, with Whirling fourth. Triune, Armacourt, Wahine Reihi and Crooning were next to finish. The Final Event. Respectful and Veta Acre claimed most attention in the Rangitoto Handicap. Professional led early from Digitalis, Ringshot, Stirvoy and Trouvaille. Crossing the top Respectful was just in front of Digitalis, with Survoy handy in front of Ringshot, Vera Acre and Trouvaille. As they came to the turn Respectful was still bowling along in' front of Aymon, Vera Acre, Survoy and Ringshot. Jn the run home Survoy came through, -;nd went on to win by a length from Vera Acre, who beat Trouvaille by a r' -iilar margin. Aymon was fourth, and 1 11 came Respectful, Ringshot and J ;italis.
