GOVERNMENT OFFICES
TO OPEN AT WHAKATANE. P.W.D. AND STATE ADVANCES. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, this day. Representations have recently been made to the Government urging the necessity for opening offices for various public Departments in \\ hakotane. Hitherto, beyond Post Office, Police and Native Department officials, no State representatives have been stationed in the town. Pleasure has, thereiore, been expressed at the decision of the Government to open next month a Public Works office at Whakatane. and al-so a branch of the State Advances Department. It is not known yet where these (Departments are to be housed, but efforts are under way to obtain quarters for them. There is a strong feeling in the community that provision should be made, not only for the housing of these Departments, but also for representatives of the . Agricultural Department and the Lands Department. The latter, it may be explained, has offices out in the "swamp area" nine miles away from the business centre of the Bay, and this makes the transaction of business inconvenient. The demand for facilities is becoming insistent, and residents are confident that action will have to be taken to establish several offices here before long.
