YACHTS CAPSIZED.

REGATTA THRILLS. KEELERS DISMASTED. STRONG WIND IN HARBOUR. Freshening about noon from a steady breeze to a squally south-easter that sometimes reached gale force, yesterday's "blow" capsized many of the smaller craft which were sailing in the Anniversary Day regatta and dismasted several of the larger ones. Driven ashore at Motuihi, the E class kecler Wakanui, owned by Mr. H. Kidd, of the Devonport Yacht Club, was holed on the rocks and had to be abandoned by her crew, who returned to Auckland by excursion steamer. The Y class boat Cupid and an L class boat drifted ashore at North Head after capsizing, and were salvaged by local residents and yachtsmen. Another L class boat which had capsized was towed to Orakei by a naval pinnace. The 14-footers Water Beetle and Manurewa capsized, the latter drifting away, though the crew were picked up. The Z class boats Te Hoa and Tamaki, the Silver Fern class boats Endeavour, Flying Cloud and Candy Kid, the S class boat Una, and the 16-footer Sea Sleigh were also overturned. 11l the V claas yacht Decima the tiller carried away, throwing one of the crew into the water, where he was left struggling in a heavy sea as the helpless' boat drifted away. In response to the signals of the Decima's crew Mr. J. Frankham, in the Manaia, rescued him. In a collision with the Tawera, the A class yacht Thelma carried away her mainsail, while the H class Celox, tlie new C class Minerva and the Z class Tanya were dismasted.
