ROAD TRANSPORT.

WAGES AND HOURS.

WARNING TO OPERATORS.

INFRINGEMENTS REPORTED

The fact that transport operators would have to satisfy him that Regulations 12 and 13 of the Transport Licensing (Goods Services) Regulations, 1»36, with respect to driving hours and wages, were being complied with was emphasised this morning by the Licensing Authority for the No. 1 transport district, Mr*. K. J. Phelan, in discussing his forthcoming sittings at Thames, Te Aroha, Matainata and Rotorua for the purpose of considering applications for renewal of licenses and new licenses. "Failure to pay heed to these regulations, which automatically become a condition of every license, will make it necessary for me to consider reviewing the licenses with a view to their revocation," said Mr. Phelan. "I want to draw attention to the necessity for operators complying most rigidly with the terms of their licenses. Cases have come before me in the past which indicate that some operators are hardly aware of the contents of their licenses, with the result that infringements have been taking place. This is viewed by me very seriously. These conditions apply to both goods service and passenger service licenses, and it was expected that the operators would make themselves familiar with the terms of their licenses, and would conform with the requirements of the Department in this respect."

Mr. Phelan will he accompanied on his tour by Mr. R. H. Nicholls, district officer to the Transport Department, while Mr. C. Lindsay, secretary of the Auckland Drivers' Union, proposes to attend the sittinjrs of the authority at Thames and Rotorua, with the object of opposing licenses in eases where it is known that the prescribed conditions are not being observed by operators.

'"We have some complaints of the Finance Act, 1930, not being- complied with," said Mr. Lindsay this morning, "and the union intends to object to the granting of licenses in these cases. There are one or two cases which I am definitely going to oppose. I will be present at the Thames and Rotorua sittinjrs of the authority, and arrangements have been made for the union to be represented at the Matainata and Te Aroha sittings."
