OPERAS BY FILM.
A RUSSIAN EXPERIMENT. MOSCOW. Keepinpr his promise to galvanise the Soviet art •world into action, P. Kerzhentzev. president of the newly - organised Arts Committee of the Soviet Council of People's Commissars, require* the cinemas to produce film operas. He : points out that there are only 21 opera houses in the Soviet Union accommodating about 25,000 people, whereas the cinemas have a hundred times more spectators every evening, and are therefore the proper medium for opera. The first opera* proposed by t':e Arte ■ Committee for production by the cinemas are '"Carmen" and "Boris • Godunov." The Arts Committee expect 15 new Soviet operas to be produced by the cinemas within the next two yeans.
