BIRTH-RATE PUZZLE.
Coercion Fails in Germany And Italy. WARNING TO AUSTRALIA. (Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 26. "The German and Italian birth-rates are steadily diminishing, despite every effort to drive woman back into the home and confine her to her supposedly natural province, namely, the rearing of children, whereas in Russia, where women are allowed to do as they please, an unprecedented birth-rate has been established," said Sir Hal Colebatch, Agent-General for West Australia, at a dinner of the Imperial Industries Club.
Sir Hal referred to the "tragic" fall in Australia's birth-rate, and declared that it was such as might cause anxiety even in an over-populated country like England.
